Spring 2011

This season is certain to give your wardrobe a shake up and may leave many of you shaking your head.

Spring has kindly covered an array of styles including being bright, bold, edgy, sleek and elegantly romantic. So whatever it is that that your style taste buds crave, there is something for all of us!

Summer Jeans

I had to begin with a wardrobe staple favourite. All cuts and styles are in (cheers for variety!) from classic denim to coloured skinny and straight leg jeans and we return to the 70’s, with the decade inspiring wide leg flares.

If you are short, try to keep the style more tapered and watch out for features that will only shorten you further like cuffs and tummy pleating. If you are of a medium build, you may have to add height by wearing a wedge.

To help elongate your legs, a wider jean is preferable.  If you are taller go for the wider flare as these are different widths, so wear a cut you feel comfortable with.

Zara have covered affordable coloured jeans for the friendly price or around $45 or if you prefer something higher end, try Bettina Liano.

Cue, Forever New and Sportscraft are all carrying some cute 7/8 length pants (these finish half-way between the knee and ankle) but be careful of side pockets if you are hippy and don’t want to draw attention to that area. Country Road have quite a few wide leg jeans including dark denim (very flattering) to a more casual navy and coffee coloured jean.

Stripe Fever

If you love your stripes then you will love Summer! From wide stripes to narrow, and bold horizontal to vertical stripes, it’s a strong fashion trend this upcoming season.

Country Road for example, is filled with stripes featuring on maxi dresses, t-shirts and scarves. Remember to be careful where you place a horizontal stripe as it will widen and draw the eye across the body. And please don’t think that a full striped dress broken up with a cardigan or scarf will detract attention from your shape. It might from the front, but what about your back view? You’ve been warned!

Barely There Nudes

For those of you who know me, you’ll know that I adore this look! I love white on cream, peach and coffee tones. This is a simple and elegant look for Summer. Nude will team well with most colours including tans, blacks and prints. To me, nude is the colour of Spring, particularly when worked with varying degrees of other soft tones and topped off with a nude heel or wedge – just divine!

I purchased a full nude ensemble from Forever New and I have to say, I just love it! Of course I will need a pair of nude heels or a wedge to accompany my fabulous new outfit and my Spring look is ready to go! Bec & Bridge, White Suede, Mink Pink, Country Road, Witchery and Jac & Jac all have some strong nude pieces so be sure to visit.

Print Dresses

The warmer months are the times where we will see many prints and patterns dominating Spring and there will be a strong print influence throughout this season.

From wild animal print to subtle abstract prints, you can make a huge statement if teamed with simple accessories. If the colour is bold, you can afford to go bold with the shoe but if the colour print is soft, look at a more neutral shoe. Josh Goot, Seed, Lisa Ho, Veronika Maine, Seduce and Alannah Hill will all cater to different degrees of styles.

Also be selective on where you place patterns, if they are subtle it can work well but if the pattern is loud and you wear in on the widest part of you it will only enhance that area.

Shoes to Yearn for!

If you are a shoe person like myself then you will probably feel overwhelmed when it comes to deciding what shoes to purchase this season. I am loving the nude heel and wedge as well as some of the brighter colours that accompany white or black.

David Jones have some great Tony Bianco brights and nude platforms, Midas are featuring some gorgeous metallic flats and Michael Kors wedges will look lovely for the season, just naming a few.

If you are after comfort, Santini cater from small espadrilles to higher but still comfortable wedges and brogues. These work well if you are taller. Seed also have some great shoes, including great clogs as do Gorman and Stewart Weizman.

The Warm Earthy Look - Is this You?

You will delighted to hear that as much as the fashion industry will focus their fashion trends on the bright pop colours, there is also a big trend on the more natural and earthy side to Spring. Colours including mustard, coffee, khaki, tan, warm orange and rust tones will feature in abundance.

Witchery, Veronika Maine, David Lawrence, Gorman, Sportscraft and Saba all have some gorgeous, warm and rich pieces to team back with nude, neutrals, tan and chocolate shoes.

Are you a Bag Lady? (Not literally… just love bags!)

Bags are plentiful this season with hobos of all sizes, satchels, the box bag, all degrees of casual to evening clutches, totes and small to medium cross body bags. If you love the nude look, try teaming your outfit with a nude neutral bag.

Trenery focus on tan, Oroton have tan and cream, Mimco play with soft grey, tan and cream and Forever New are featuring soft romantic tones and clutches. There is a truly something for everyone.

A bag in a softer shade for Spring is a great investment. If you want to incorporate the pop colour to an accessory and not on your body, a bright bag will definitely add that “Spring zing” to your outfit.

Spring Into A Blazer

Blazers are a smarter, edgy alternative to the cardigan. Variety is key with white, cream, black, striped or even a denim blazer adding a smart casual elegance to slacks, shirts or even your favourite dress.

A blazer can add a sexy look if teamed with a nude silhouette and cinching in at your waist to add shape. If you are shorter be sure it finishes at your hipbone and if you are taller you can afford the longer length.

Playing With Costume Jewellery

If you like to change your watch with the seasons, why not go white or bright with labels like Omega, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Mimco catering to your whim.

Lovisa is like a girls candy store of all things affordable. Bright in every shade but also featuring an array of earthy tones. Sussan and Witchery are great for costume Jewellery, while Veronika Maine and Cue are focusing a lot on cuffs this season in brights and animal prints. If you have an outfit that you have worn and worn, why not revamp it with some wow accessories and a pop of Spring colour? You’ll be surprised how new it will feel again!
